Sword Art Online: The Lost Song is the latest title in the SAO franchise to release here in europe and our first physical official game release. Releasing on the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita. We reviewed the release based on it’s Asian release which featured english subtitles. Below the review are my notes based on my time with the PAL Playstation 4 version.

Review copy supplied by Bandai Namco Europe.

The 3rd title in the Sword Art Online series of games following Infinity Moment and Hollow Fragment, this time it is set in the game Alfheim Online (ALO) and remains non canon much like the rest of the series, existing as a alternative version of the story but remaining in the same time-line as the other games and anime.

SAOLS is set on a original story from the Anime in a expansion of the ALO game called “Svart Alfheim” and sees the players logging on as soon as the expansion goes live to explore the new floating islands as they intend to be the first to clear this new area, Along the way your party will expand and you will make friends and form rivalries. Rivals such as guild Shamrock who seem to be on equal footing with Kirito and friends if not forging ahead for the majority of your game forcing your group to play catch up, your next adventure awaits!

Some of the major changes over the previous titles include the ability to fly , character creation, a huge level cap settling out at level 1000 and also a larger party.

Flight – As the game is set in ALO the characters now have the ability to fly which is clearly useful for exploring the floating islands and reaching locations that you would be otherwise unable to access, the flight mechanic also stretches into aerial combat and evasion,. While I have had little experience with flight in games this came very easily with only a few issues at first, however I personally put this down to my own inexperience as after about 20 minutes I was gliding across the map with ease gathering items and taking out foes. Even new players such as my self should quickly get to grips with this interesting gameplay mechanic.

Character creation – for the first time you can create your own character and play as them instead of Kirito though it makes no difference to story progression where you are still treated as if you are Kirito. As refreshing as it is to have this character creation system the options are actually very limited, something I expect to see resolved through future DLC release of new outfits, customisation options etc much like there was in Hollow Fragment.

Larger party – This time round you have a party of 3 unlike the previous titles where you could only have one team-mate at a time unless you entered multi-player where you could have three, While this makes levelling individual members easier. The biggest bonus to this is you can fill set roles in your party, for example Kirito is my main dealing DPS while i have my archer backing me up and a dedicated medic, making mobs easier to deal with and making combat even more customized to each players style.

As for the way the story is told SAOLS default’s to the norm with the series and many other JRPGS, the story is told via 2D character portrait’s and text, As stated this is the version imported from Asia and does contain voice acting thought this is not in English and I am unsure if the EU release will contain English voice acting but in this version all subtitles are in English. And I have to say after playing Hollow Fragment and seeing how horrific the translation was in places, Lost Song was a breath of fresh air as the translation is much better, making the story easy to follow and enjoyable rather than dealing with seemingly random words been thrown together in places.

In itself the story is quite simple, you are Kirito the Black Swordsman, one of the survivor’s of the SAO incident and accidental harem collector. After recovering from the SAO incident he returns to his normal life, deciding to join a new game with his friends and after enjoying it learns of a new expansion and vow that he and his friends would be the first to clear it. Along the way he discovers that Dr Rainbow a young scientist and idol renown around the world for her work with VRMMO and her music career, performs live shows inside ALO and goes to investigate.

Being based,all be it rather loosely on an Anime most would assume the game would used a animated art style right, and they would be correct, although slightly the character designs are somewhat reminiscent of their Anime counterparts making this game quite pleasant to look at both in the 2d animated story telling and the 3d game play. However there are some issues to be noted in the form of stuttering, for the most part the game runs smoothly though on a few occasions there is a noticeable lag, It is usually when in battle and only for a split second but its clearly there. This is something that I am hoping will be patched or handled a lot better when played on the PS4 when later this year.

However my more major gripe comes in the form of the game locking up, while the start and end of the game this seemed to improve, during the bulk of the game at least half a dozen times it locked up, usually during flight,. While this annoying at the best of times when the game starts up it states it has a auto save feature but during these locks it seemed to lose a lot of progress putting me back up to 5 hours to my last manual save at this point I came to the conclusion that you could in fact only manually save in the inn/your room.

On to the audio now and though the voice acting is not English the fact it’s there is quite a pleasant little addition to the already well done sound track that accompanies the title. The sound track seems to go well with the landscapes and flight has the addition of hearing the wind change as you move at varying speed and change your direction.

The battle system is tweaked this time round to using square for light attacks and triangle for heavy attacks a simple enough system and easy to chain the two together, while holding right bumper allows you to use your battle skills, tapping it sheaths your weapon and holding the bumper with weapons sheathed will allow you to use magic that range from offensive elemental spells to healing. All in all it is quite a easy to use system and allows for fast paced battle both on the land or in the air.

Editor note – Having spent 10 hours on the Playstation 4 version of the game I can confirm content is identical, graphically everything is a little smoother and touched up, frame rate is stable and the game remains a joy to play, if you have the means i’d suggest paying the extra to upgrade to the Playstation 4 version.

Welcome all readers, those returning & any visiting us for the first time, to our new site. Roughly a week ago now another milestone was passed here as the 2nd year of OGUK ended and our 3rd year began.
I've been here since the very first day and it hasn't seemed like 2 years of work has flown past already, but maybe I'm just getting old. It's about time things got spruced up a little around here though wouldn’t you say? To be honest using Blogger has been good for the most part. It's allowed us to grow & become comfortable with reviews etc, as well as build a relationship with some publishers that fit into what we are about here, without having to worry about costs & overheads. To be honest with our readers though, some publishers do turn their noses up to that approach. It's why you may have noticed some games, even niche ones, we have either reviewed or posted content on late – or not at all. This new site will act as a relaunch and a statement of intent. It'll give our readers something much more pleasant to look at, whilst boosting our setup to publishers which should allow us to bring you more timely news & reviews going forward.

Our resident indie guru, Des Mayer, found himself with some spare time not too long ago and started work on building our new home. We've been double posting content during the past couple of weeks before going live so it isn't so barren here as we were looking to start afresh, but I am keeping our Blogger open in the coming days just in case there's a need for the older content (You may be able to find a link around here somewhere if you want to go back at any time) For the moment we'll be digging into our own pockets to fund the costs of running this site, so there won't be any intrusive ads etc for now. Some of the guys have been prodding me regarding ads for a while now, we are all just average joe's who enjoy games when life & work allows, but I've been holding off. I may have found a way to generate revenue without ads to keep the site self-sufficient in the future, so hopefully our readers will appreciate an ad free outlook for us!
There's still some tweaks to be done within the next few days or so (hopefully all will be ironed out before Des goes to EGX to get us some scoops!), the sites probably only about 90% done as new artwork needs to be finalised and there's still a few things we need to bring over from the old website. We also still have some more community based ideas we'll be looking in to, as well as competitions, tournaments etc - so there's still a few more announcements to come in the near future.
If your interested in getting involved with writing anything here, then get in touch. We are always looking to recruit enthusiasts like ourselves and aren't afraid to offer a chance to those that are keen but lack experience. Suggestions & ideas are always welcomed here from our readers too, so drop us an email or contact someone from the site via the various means at any time (we'll be getting all new email addresses for contacting the site & staff very soon, but our outlook (otakugamersuk@outlook.com) is still open just in case)
We hope you'll continue to visit as we grow our little corner of the internet
Another day and another set of Persona 5 news. This time it comes in the form of the opening cinematic, details of the first four characters and the announcement of a special anime.
Characters

Protagonist (voiced by Jun Fukuyama)

The leader of the Phantom Thieves. A 16-year-old young man and second-year high school student who transfers to Shujin High School. He seems quiet and well-mannered at first glance, but gives a completely different impression once he has donned his “phantom thief” guise. He finds residence at the Shiken Cafe run by his parents’ friend. The reason for him moving from the city to the capital Tokyo is currently unknown.

Ryuji Sakamoto (voiced by Mamoru Miyano)

Just like the protagonist, he is a 16-year-old, second-year student at Shujin High School. He stands out with his wild behavior and seems to be a “problem child” even within the school. More than often, his problematic behavior imposes on the hospitality of the school’s teachers and advisers. He previously did not behave the way he currently does, but the origin of his bad behavior is currently unknown.

An Takamaki (voiced by Nana Mizuki)

A 16-year-old, quarter-American girl who attends Shujin High School. Unable to fit in with those around her due to her noticeably different appearance, she isolates herself within the school. She is often seen hanging out with the protagonist and Ryuji Sakamoto. Strange rumors about her have seemingly been circulating the school, but whether or not they’re true is currently unknown.

Morgana (voiced by Ikue Otani)

The most mysterious member of the Phantom Thieves. Childlike in height, her appearance imitates that of a black cat, but her true identity is completely unknown. It looks like she’s wearing something on her head, but…? That is all the information we currently have. Though she does resemble the black cat often seen with the protagonist…

Some new details have been shared about upcoming action RPG Ni-Oh.
At a stage show yesterday, Koei Tecmo shared the follow;

The main protagonist, William, can use multiple weapons whilst fighting

Each weapon type will have its own characteristic - spears have a wider range of attack and can hit a larger amount of enemies at once.

Switching weapons types in battles will be key to success as well (very much like the Souls series)

There is an online mode called Chinokata Dzuka

When online you will see a bloody mound which will contain all players that have died there. Upon touching this you will summon a players Jigurui and you will have to battle it.

It has been said that these battles are very tough but the rewards are great upon defeating the past player

Ni-Oh is sounding like it will be a very tough action RPG but as proven with other similar games, the idea of a tough but fair challenge is very popular.

Ni-Oh is due out in 2016 on the PS4.

Star Fox Zero has been delayed until Q1 2016. The title was originally planned for a November 20th release but has been pushed back because Nintendo need more time to polish it;

"We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes. While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing.
To the people looking forward to the launch of the game this holiday season, I am very sorry.
Star Fox Zero is going to bring new game play and experiences that take it far beyond the framework established by Star Fox 64. All the members of the development team are doing our best so that the final product will not betray your expectations. And the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we’re aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016. Please stay tuned for further announcements."

Star Fox Zero is playable at EGX next week so you have attended any of the days, head over to the Nintendo booth to see how it is coming along.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094379609902846785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1468975850368841695.post-30093672742132156572015-09-17T17:59:00.000+01:002015-09-17T17:59:08.610+01:00News: New Class Details for PVZ:GW2

This is a little outside what we normally report about but this is a game that I am really excited for. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is the sequel to the highly popular multiplayer 3rd person shooter, Garden Warfare.

In addition to extra modes and new single player options, six new classes have been announced. Up until now very little was known about them but in a recent developers diary, new details have been released;

Imp and Z-Mech – The smallest and most agile of the zombies that turns into a Z-Mech robo of mass destruction with missiles.

Citron – A time-travelling bounty hunter from the future – and also an orange.

Super Brainz – The flashy, punchy-powerhouse superhero with exceptional hair and a charismatic smile.

Rose – An extremely powerful sorceress that can turn zombie foes into fully playable goats.

Captain Deadbeard – A crusty peg-legged captain with a trick weapon up his sleeve.

Kernal Corn – Leads the plant offensive as the primary assault class with dual cob busters and a high rate of fire.

These extra six classes bring the total number of classes to 14 with over 100 playable characters.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is being released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring 2016.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094379609902846785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1468975850368841695.post-50251218848147254362015-09-17T17:50:00.000+01:002015-09-17T17:52:44.162+01:00News: The Witness Release Date

The next game from the creator of Braid has been given a release date. The Witness will be releasing on the PS4 in Europe and the US on January 26th.

The first person puzzle adventure game was first announced in 2013 and the developers believed that it would be completed in time for the launch of the PS4 but this turned out to be a goal they could not reach. However though the results of this delay is that the game is now huge;

"When we started making this game, I figured it would have between eight and 12 hours of playtime. As it happens, the game we’ve finally built is around 10 times as big as that. If you are a completionist who wants to wring every last drop out of the game, you might expect to play for 80 hours, or possibly 100. For people who don’t want to go quite that far, the game’s still got plenty for you."

The Witness is a stunning looking game.

Less is more - this is how Golden Ruby Games describes their upcoming platformer game, Extreme Exorcism. This is a game that will pretty much punish you if like to button bash attacks.
The goal of the game is a very simple one - you spawn in a stage (which can be played solo or co-op) with the simple goal of destroying a possessed chair that jumps randomly around the stage. You can destroy it using what ever you have in your arsenal. However though, once you kill the chair of the stage, the next stage will start with a ghost that will mimic every move and attack you carried out in the previous round. It sounds all fun but the ghost are enemies and your attacks from round gone by can kill you so your focus may shift from the possessed chair onto these ghost. Needless to say it will change the way you play the game in future rounds. The developers have given some handy tips over at the PS Blog;

Less is more: The less shots you fire the less you need to worry about

That’s not to say it won’t get chaotic. After round 10, things can get confusing for most and your plan of one bullet per ghost can fly out the window. This brings us to tip number two:Herd and eliminate: Try to group as many ghosts in a part of the map as possible, using more powerful weapons to destroy as many of them as possible.

Not only will destroying large groups lessen your stress, it’ll add to your overall score helping to unlock more stages and weapons. But the most important tip is:Exorcize those ghosts: When the Extreme Exorcism appears on stage, it should be your main focus. It not only completely erases ghosts from the board, it makes you invulnerable for a short period of time.

At EGX next week I will be getting my hands on this game so stick around for my impressions on this hardcore platformer. At the moment this is looking to be a very good couch co op game which will bring hours of endless fun and anger.

After the news that Persona 5 has been delayed, Director Katsura Hashino has reached out to fans in an interview.

As I do not speak any Japanese I have taken the following translation from Siliconera;

"Hashino says that at the moments, all the “parts” of Persona 5 have been assembled, and they’re currently tuning up the gameplay. In order to meet all the expectations from fans, the chief director and the others are focusing on making Persona 5 into a more complete game, so he asks if it’s okay to keep you guys waiting just a little longer.

As for the game’s development, he says that everything is going smoothly, so not to worry about that.

On the subject of the trailer that was shown at Tokyo Game Show 2015, the part Hashino wanted to share most with everyone is about the concept of “stealing hearts,” which is done by sneaking into one’s heart in phantom thief-like fashion, which will be a focus in the game’s story.

Since Persona 5 is being developed for a new console, Hashino didn’t want to hold anything back and just make a short game, so instead, they’re packing the game with all kinds of content, and it’ll be the most voluminous title the series has yet to see as far as gameplay and play time goes.

For the main cast, Atlus got help from very talented individuals, so Hashino says that you can expect great things out of everything, from event scenes,to battle sequences and dungeon play.

To end the video, Hashino asks if all of you enjoyed the recent trailer, which he believes had a lot to share. However, regarding the development delay of the game, he deeply apologizes to everyone that has been waiting in anticipation for so long. That said, he feels that in order to make the game into something more complete, and something that can provide players with a better experience, more time will be needed, so he asks if you can wait just a little longer."

Capcom have announced that the latest character to be added to Street Fighter is Karin, who first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3.

The official community for Street Fighter V, the Capcom Fighters Network, was also announced.

Official Release from Capcom

Karin

Karin is the young heiress to the Kanzuki Zaibatsu, a global financial conglomerate that possesses vast wealth and resources. Her regal and pampered upbringing is what led to her high-maintenance attitude and razor-sharp wit. But behind her flowing golden locks lies a true martial artist obsessed with upholding her family motto, “In all things be victorious!” Karin is well versed in numerous martial arts, which she and her family combined to create a unique “Kanzuki style” of fighting.

In Street Fighter V, Karin is a well-rounded character, possessing a wide array of strikes and moves at her disposal for any situation. Utilizing her new dash move allows her to close the distance quickly between her opponents and go in for a quick high-low attack or throw.

And just when the opponent thinks they’ve figured out how to deal with the pressure, Karin’s V-Trigger completely changes up her game plan by allowing her to perform her signature Guren Ken multi-string attacks and variations. Players who enjoy attacking with speed and a large variety of tools will find Karin to be extremely satisfying to utilize.

V-Skill: Meioken

Karin lunges forward with a devastating palm strike that dissipates projectiles and knocks down the opponent if it connects, all while helping to build her V-Trigger gauge. By holding down the buttons, players can charge the move for a split second, giving it better hit and block properties.
V-Trigger: Kanzuki-Ryu Guren No Kata

Karin channels her inner Ki to unlock the true potential of the Kanzuki fighting style, giving her access to the Guren Ken attack, which in itself possesses over half a dozen different follow ups and variations. After the initial Guren Ken, she is able to transition immediately into an overhead attack, a low sweep, a flying throw, another quick set of strikes, or even a backdash to bait out counterattacks. This gives her immense flexibility in controlling the flow of the fight, ensuring that she comes out on top.

Capcom Fighters Network

The Capcom Fighters Network (CFN) has been confirmed as the official community destination that will be integrated into the online infrastructure of Street Fighter V. Fans and players will be able to visit CFN at any time to view player profiles, match statistics, replay videos, as well as register friends and send battle invitations. Players can quickly and easily see where the action is happening via a global “heat map” and stay up to date on the latest game news and tournament information. Additional CFN details and features will be shared in the coming months leading up to the release of Street Fighter V.
